Structure and Vehicle Fire Response

Decisive action. Coordinated crews. Protecting what matters.

When a home, business, or vehicle catches fire, conditions can change in seconds. Umatilla Fire responds with a clear purpose: protect lives, locate people in danger, control the fire, and prevent it from spreading. Our firefighters train for emergencies ranging from residential structure fires to commercial buildings, industrial facilities, passenger vehicles, and commercial trucks.

Structure Fire Response

A large building is engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky, creating a dramatic and dangerous scene.

Every building presents different challenges. Construction, occupancy, access, fire location, and the potential for trapped occupants all influence the first arriving crew’s decisions. Firefighters establish command, assess conditions, secure a water supply, and deploy resources where they can make the greatest difference.

Depending on conditions and available personnel, operations may include:

  • Search and rescue for occupants who may be trapped or unable to escape.
  • Interior or exterior fire attack based on fire conditions, building stability, and available staffing.
  • Protection of neighboring buildings threatened by flames, heat, or wind-driven embers.
  • Coordinated ventilation to support fire control and improve conditions.
  • Salvage and overhaul to protect belongings, locate concealed fire, and reduce the risk of rekindling.

Our approach combines urgency with disciplined judgment. Crews continually reassess conditions and adjust tactics as the incident develops.

Vehicle Fire Response

Vehicle fires present hazards that extend beyond the flames. Fuel, pressurized components, combustible cargo, traffic, and alternative power systems can create complex conditions for firefighters and the public.

Umatilla Fire responds to fires involving passenger vehicles, recreational vehicles, commercial trucks, and other transportation equipment. Crews establish a protected work area, assess hazards, extinguish the fire, and prevent extension into nearby vehicles, buildings, or roadside vegetation.

For incidents involving electric or hybrid vehicles, firefighters account for high-voltage systems, battery involvement, and the potential for delayed reignition. Crews coordinate with law enforcement, towing operators, and other responding resources as needed.

A fire truck responds to a large fire explosion from a truck, with thick smoke and flames rising against a blue sky.

Local Response. Regional Strength.

Umatilla Fire’s two on-duty career firefighters, supported by a duty officer and available resident interns and volunteers, initiate the response and establish operational priorities. Structure fires and other demanding incidents require additional personnel to perform fire attack, search, water supply, and firefighter safety functions.

Through automatic and mutual aid partnerships, neighboring agencies help build the coordinated response these emergencies demand. Interior operations depend on conditions, adequate personnel, and appropriate safety measures.

From the first arriving engine through the final check for hidden fire, our commitment is to act with purpose, work as one team, and protect our community with professionalism and care.
